Harbour Lights Painters, based in Mastic Beach, NY, is an affiliated chapter of the International Society of Decorative Painters (SDP) which was started in 1972 by Priscilla Hauser. This group knew that decorative painting was a teachable art form because of the systematic method that is used. The use of either patterns or free hand designs allows a high degree of success without academic training or inherent drawing ability. SDP promotes decorative painting throughout the world and has grown in these past thirty-two years to an organization of over 26,000 members in some 30 countries.
Our Chapter membership is a mix of painters from beginning painter to teacher. The majority of our painters use acrylics, but we have some oil and watercolor painters too. Our membership area is primarily the eastern section of Suffolk county, although we have members from other areas of Long Island as well. Our membership is open to anyone interested in learning and/or promoting decorative painting. Interested parties are welcome to attend a chapter meeting to learn more about us. Contact any officer regarding attending a meeting. We would love to have you attend so you can experience the camaraderie of our group. See the Membership page for information on becoming a member.
Currently we meet on the last Tuesday evening of each month January through November (no meeting in December due to the holiday season) - from 7:00 PM to about 9:00 PM. (see Calendar for location and dates) There is a a short business meeting including a “show and tell” of member recent art projects, and then a program designed around teaching decorative painting. Snacks and beverages, donated by members are served. In addition, we sponsor full day “local teacher” workshops each month, and each year we have sponsored two-day seminars with nationally known travel teachers.
We promote decorative painting by displays of our work and/or information at local art events and libraries. We have some community service activities which also promote decorative painting. Some of those activities have included painting place mats for “Meals on Wheels,” painting cards and gift boxes for veterans in VA hospitals and homes, and painting Memory Boxes for Sloan Kettering to distribute to parents who have lost a child. Our Community Service Committee and other members regularly provide painting activities for hospitalized children at Stony Brook Hospital through the Child Life Program.
